Jan Stöckel
Director and DoP
Jan (Rome, 1988) is an Italian-German filmmaker who lives and works between Berlin, London, and Naples. During his studies in Visual Anthropology at Goldsmiths University of London, he developed an interest in the world of documentary cinema.
He has worked on video-ethnography projects for clients such as Ipsos Mori Ethnography Centre of Excellence, Microsoft Research, and Shift Design, addressing topics ranging from social issues to health and technology, and creating "daily life" documentaries in the UK, Italy, Germany, South Africa, and the United States.
With several years of experience as a director, DoP, sound engineer, and editor, he co-directed the 2019 documentary No Island Like Home about the Caribbean island of Montserrat. His latest short film, Ancora, has been selected and awarded at various international festivals. He is currently developing Shields, a feature film about the fishing community of North Shields in northeast England.
Since 2020, he has been collaborating with Lunia Film.
He speaks Italian, German, English, French, and Spanish.

Chioggia, Southern part of the Venice Lagoon, 5am. Like every day, Michele, Cristian, and Andrea set out in their boat in search of sea urchins. Andrea has chosen to spend his summer vacation this way, learning a trade that his grandfather and father have practiced for decades. As he navigates his first experiences on the boat, Andrea embarks on a journey of discovery, exploring one of his possible futures.
Berlin Conversations on Mental Health (interview series, 2022)
A series of interviews with experts on the impact of the socio-cultural environment on mental health in Berlin. The project is part of Mindscapes, an international cultural program funded by the Wellcome Trust, aimed at fostering a transformation in understanding, discussing, and addressing mental health.
Fatconomy - Of Material and Labour (docu-fiction, 2020)
Of Material and Labour is a speculative documentary based on the FATCONOMY research by British designer Robert Charles Johnson. It was produced and exhibited as part of the Designers in Residence Showcase at the Design Museum in London.

After a devastating volcanic eruption in 1995, the beautiful Caribbean island of Montserrat experienced a mass exodus. However, half of the population refused to leave, despite the social and economic devastation caused by the volcano. Can a community shaken by the force of nature ever truly recover?
