Masslo

A social justice film that reconstructs a story from thirty years ago, highlighting issues of migration, racial injustice, labour exploitation, and illegal recruitment practices that remain relevant today.

Late 1980s. The Piazza degli Schiavi, or “Square of Slaves,” is an abandoned roundabout in Villa Literno, a struggling town in southern Italy where African immigrants are chosen like cattle for tomato-picking work. Among them is Jerry Masslo, the ill-fated protagonist of one of Italy's most notorious racially-motivated murders.

This story is a contemporary odyssey of a man in search of freedom and human dignity.

Escaping apartheid only to encounter the same violence and exploitation in Italy, the so-called land of beauty and democracy.
